I read some parts of these chains, but I was more attracted to the Lord of the Rings, especially after enjoying the Hobbit.
I do not know, but the world of Tolkien attracted me more, I love fantasia and stories of fantastic creatures

I was never really fond of the Tolkien worlds.
Harry Potter was OK, but I found entirely too many things in all the books that left me thinking "WHAAAAT..."
I find the Honor Harrington universe by David Weber much more to my liking.
For that matter, the robots/Galactic Empire/Foundation series by Asimov is great. It is about time to re-read it. Again.
WOW, that is a really tough question, because I loved both series! They are as different as night and day, and I love each series because of how different and adventurous each world is. Harry Potter has more fun elements, but it is also fun to read Smeagle, the Golem's, parts. Both were exciting to read, IMHO.

Lord of the Rings
I only made it through the first Harry Potter book, and it didn't really interest me. It might be an age thing - I was nearly 30 by the time the first book was published in the U.S. and I had my fling with the fantasy genre in my teens (I even liked the Shannara books once). Also, I prefer The Hobbit to LotR.
I will say that I admire J.K. Rowling and respect her thoughts on writing.
Harry Potter for sure. I couldn't wait to pick up the Harry Potter books and see what was next, whereas with Lord of the Rings, I was grimly determined to finish all three books, but after just a few chapters, I found myself saying, "Okay, every day I will read five pages before I can read anything else." It took me the better part of a year to get through them. OMG, just the memory of all the poems/songs makes me faintly nauseated.
I much prefer "Harry Potter", perhaps in part because I always had a fascination for novels set at boarding schools. I also found a charm in the "Harry Potter" books that the LOTR trilogy (excluding "The Hobbit") seems to lack. LOTR is that much darker and takes itself more seriously, from the language to the thematic elements. I do not doubt that LOTR is brilliant, but "Harry Potter" is for me, more enjoyable in every way.
I do not like the spin off "Fabtastic Beasts" movies all that much, however.
I read The Hobbit and LOTR in my teens. I think I made it through them all twice, but there was a pervading sense of brooding and melancholy that didn't sit well with me, plus I didn't much care for the rather stiff and pompous writing style.
I didn't pick up Harry Potter until I was in my 40s, and was surprised at how readable and entertaining it was by comparison. Rowland's world was obviously not planned out as painstakingly as Tolkien's and there are lots of plot holes and inconsistencies, but while I wouldn't want to live in either one, I'd rather visit the Harry Potter world for a few days than Middle-Earth.
