A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick was the winning book for October 2019 that was selected in The C-D Random Book Club thread, as detailed here:

This is its discussion thread. You need not be a C-D Random Book Club participant to take part in any of the discussion threads, as anyone is encouraged to read along with us. Although three months will be given toward reading this book, this thread will be here and open to discussion at any time in the future.

From the description:

Quote:
Rural Wisconsin, 1909. In the bitter cold, Ralph Truitt, a successful businessman, stands alone on a train platform waiting for the woman who answered his newspaper advertisement for "a reliable wife." But when Catherine Land steps off the train from Chicago, she's not the "simple, honest woman" that Ralph is expecting. She is both complex and devious, haunted by a terrible past and motivated by greed. Her plan is simple: she will win this man's devotion, and then, ever so slowly, she will poison him and leave Wisconsin a wealthy widow. What she has not counted on, though, is that Truitt — a passionate man with his own dark secrets —has plans of his own for his new wife. Isolated on a remote estate and imprisoned by relentless snow, the story of Ralph and Catherine unfolds in unimaginable ways.

My library had a copy. Going to get started on it tonight. One thing I did forget to do was add a poll to the thread.

Hi phonelady61--I just looked and I'm on chapter 10 too! I have my suspicions as to what is coming next, but I don't want to spoilerize anything and I might be wrong. I am enjoying the author's style and the story line a lot. I have two other books I'm supposed to be reading right now, and more often than not, I find myself picking up this one because I want to find out what happens next, which for me is a sure sign of a good book.

I'm kind of glad I'm reading this now instead of later on--a fictional Wisconsin winter on top of the real one I'll be experiencing starting in a month or two would be too much snow to handle!

I haven't started it yet, but I did put a hold on it, at the library. I was delaying, as I thought the discussion was going to start in January ( after the 3 month window expired ). So many books to read!!

I am up to chapter four so far and have gotten a feel for things, although I will let this thread develop some more and/or have more reviews come in before making some comments.

Yes, some months were requested and I'm also not ready to discuss until everyone has read it.
