Book Titles (ebook, classic, authors, non-fiction)

With the number of books published on seemingly a daily basis (ebooks included), I always wonder how authors come up with original titles. I would have to guess that there is a way for them (or the publisher) to check for duplicate titles. Of course I wonder the same about song titles......

Coming up with a title can be very difficult. Sometimes the author just goes with one that s/he doesn't especially like because they can't come up with a better one.

Titles themselves generally can't be copyrighted, so books *can* have the same title -- do some amazon checking and you'll see. As an author, you generally don't want your book to have the same title as an existing book, simply to avoid confusion. If it's a popular book (or popular in some genre or with some niche market), that book will come up first in searches if people search for your book.

Duplicate titles happen all the time. You can't copyright a title.

I rather like adding an adjective or adjectival phrase to the title although in this instance subsequent works dropped both a noun and an adjectival phrase.

I would guess that unique non-fiction titles are easier to come up with than fiction ones. After all a book about an actual person on event would have a unique title hi-lighting the subject matter.
