Anything that takes place in a tropical locale I'm all for reading.

I'm completely suffering as I read Eat, Pray, Love. This book is not holding my interest or attention at all.

i second Eat Pray Love. i loved this book.
i would also recoment Escape, written by Caroline Jessop and the FDLS. i know they live here in the US, but i am telling you it's a different world and she paints an amazing picture of it--very haunting

Couldn't even get through Eat, Pray, Love. Maybe your group will find it more to their liking than I did.

We actually met last night and the reviews were mixed. 3 of us didn't like it while the other half did. We all agreed that her writing was good, we liked the spirituality aspect and the struggle with finding "God". On the flip side we all thought she was a bit neurotic, needy and egotistical. However as she did get more in tune with herself she did grow out of the needy aspect.

For next month we're on the completely opposite spectrum in selections. We selected Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann.

Oh, my, pfw!, but this got a good chuckle out of me. This should make for a very interesting discussion -- especially if you can imagine the two interacting, somehow. Be sure to find the Rolling Stones' "Mother's Little Helper" as some background music for when the Book Club members arrive.

I am wondering if, in 2008, you guys will find Susann's work 'tedious' or out-dated now.

Each month is a different topic, so none of our selections interact. The July topic is hometown author. Being from TX, I decided on Larry McMurty although I almost went with Dan Jenkins. Obviously a CA native selected Valley of the Dolls and we all voted to read that one. There were quite a few good, more modern selections and we did have a tough time deciding. It came down to this one and one about a murder mystery at the Worlds Fair in Chicago. I don't remember the title or author though of the Worlds Fair one.

The discussion will be interesting considering that some of us weren't even alive in the 60's.

Beautiful work. I have long contended I want to see Dinesan's Kenya before I die, myself, or the big game is gone.
