Hi

I am writing to you today from Germany in the hope for assistance in finding an English children's book which I read with my father when I was little in the early/mid 1990s.

The book was about a little fat conductor, who's dream of conducting in the Royal Albert Hall came true in the end. Unfortunately I cannot remember much more. Only that we stumbled over the word "handkarechief", a word neither I nor my German father knew.

The book was one of the first books I read. I can imagine it was a lady bird book or radom house book, but I am not sure.

My father and I have been looking for this book for years, but with as little memories as we have, it is impossible to find online.

Now that my father is fatally ill, I am determined to find this book, we both have such fond memories of.

Maybe the book rings a bell?

I would sincerely appreciate your assistance.

I've been giving your situation some thought, and without knowing anything about 1990's in Germany my suggestion may be ridiculous, but here goes. When I have a question about books, I go to two sources of info: librarians, and book sellers. (My heros in life.)

If your parents were avid book people, they may have bought your book, or borrowed it from a library. (Hopefully it wasn't sent to you from another country.) I would research what booksellers and library were in your area at that time. That wasn't that long ago, and if either has a children's section, you might find the book there.

(And the term is handkerchief, in American English, a hemmed square of thin fabric which can be carried in the pocket or handbag. We still use them.)

Thank you for your recommendations. Actually I already contacted the Children's Literature Research Collections
University of Minnesota Libraries and the Barbican children's Library in London, but no one could help me so far. I grew up in Northern Ireland, where they only had a tiny library. Maybe I should just ask there as well. I am starting to believe that the book only exists in our imagination...but I don't want to give up yet.

I would guess that if you really want to find out, you can, but if your determination is already flagging, possibly not.

What about contacting someone at The Royal Albert Hall? Perhaps they have a historian or someone who has been around a while and will remember the book given it's association with them?

Librarian here. I specialize in adult services, but just happen to be at work tonight - only mere feet away from my children's librarians. Let me see if I can solve the mystery!

(I know the OP was a week ago, so hopefully they're still checking the thread; if they haven't found the book yet)

Yes I am still looking for the book and checking the feed. I would be very grateful if you could ask your colleagues. That would be lovely of you. Thanks for your efforts!
