That part doesn’t improve the more you read. There is a lot of violence, and every main character is a victim of it at some point in the stories. It does seem like the author’s formula. The times she writes about were very dangerous, but still one would expect that most people even then never encountered the type of stuff that happens to these people on a regular basis. Still, it does make some sense because they aren’t living quiet lives. They’re rebels mixed up in two different wars with a lot of taming the frontier in between. And with their knowledge of what happens and Jamie’s ability to always be in the thick of things, you’d expect them to get into many dangerous situations.
