Saint Maybe by Anne Tyler really made me stop and think about the lip service we give religion instead of living it. Really made me think about things.

The Grapes of Wrath - I just read it for the first time several weeks ago... I went "Woah".

Yeah, I should read that again. Had to read it in HS and just thought it was slow and depressing. Had to write a term paper on it. I think I would see things differently at this point in my life.

Loved The Kite Runner, but I think I said "whoa" more for Thousand Splendid Suns.

I agree with Marciesmom....1000 Splendid Suns was definitely a "Whoa" book for me. I was absolutely captivated by the story from the first page. It is such a magnificent story of cruelty, love and endurance. If you have not had a chance, I can't recommend it highly enough.

I want to read that again. I loved it so much.

Infinite Jest made me say "woah" many, many times. One of my all-time favorites.

Recently it would have to be "Shantaram", a book which really grabs you by the throat.
I remember the powerful punch of "The Grapes of Wrath" and "Of Mice and Men" too and so many more. A great book is something which stays with you forever and does not let go. Books like "1984", "Animal Farm" by Orwell, " Germinal" ( Emile Zola and all his other books pretty much) , "The Republic" by Plato, anything by Chekov or Dostoievski, Maupassant , and so many more.

"The Boys in Striped Pyjamas" by John Boyne was another recent one which left me emotionally drained but in a good way if that makes sense. it evoked so many emotions and made you think. A beautiful novel.

I ran across Shantaram in the bookstore the other day and I almost picked it up but then I get distracted by a few others and left it on the shelf. After hearing people on this thread discuss it as well as you telling me about it, I may have to pick it up some time soon.

I just recently read "The Grapes of Wrath" and have fallen in love with Steinbeck. That book was wonderful.

Another book that made me say "woa" for a different reason (because of the sheer uniqueness and hilariousness of it) was "A Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole.

I am reading Dracula right now, and say "woa" b/c it is nothing like what I expected.

Another book that I really enjoyed recently with a great twist ending was Me and Emma. Very good read.

"The Life of Pi" did this to me. If you've read it, you know I can't say why! Ditto with "Me and Emma". Thanks for bringing that one up, I almost forgot about it.
