Time Magazine just named 2666 the Best Book of the Year:
Bolaño's 2666: The Best Book of 2008 - TIME

The New York Times placed it in the top ten books of the year:

Here's the review by Lethem from the NYT:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/09/bo.../Lethem-t.html

Haunting, beautiful, epic... you'll lose sleep, have nightmares, and come out a different person on the other side.

This is one of the few true works of real genius you'll come across in this lifetime.

about Bolano:
ROBERTO BOLAÑO was born in Santiago, Chile, in 1953. He grew up in Chile and Mexico City, where he was a founder of the infrarealist poetry movement. His first full-length novel, The Savage Detectives, received the Herralde Prize and the Romulo Gallegos Prize when it appeared in 1998. Bolaño died in Blanes, Spain, at the age of fifty.

Bolaño is AWESOME. I cant believe i found a post about him in this forum. I used the search button cause i was curious if there was something about 2666 (novel im currently reading) and i cant believe theres a thread about him.

Of the novels i read, my favourite is "The savage detectives" the most fascinating novel i ever read if there is one. Absolutely life-changing.

Everything else i read from Bolaño (putas asesinas -short-stories-, La literatura nazi en America, entre paréntesis, llamadas teléfonicas y 2666 -almost done-) are wonderful, but Los detectives salvajes goes a step forward. Its life changing.

If anyone has the opportunity to read this author, please do, you wont regret it.

I'm going to give The Savage Detectives a try. I'll let you know what I think of it. Please relate what you think of 2666 after you finish it. That is one long book.....

I just picked up a copy of Between Parentheses from the library as recommended by the NYT a few months ago. The book contains essays, speeches and articles from 1953 through 2003. Just started, but found his thoughts on Dyslexia quite interesting.
