No one likes to think about dying, but novelists seem scared to—well, death—to write about it.

They never stop do they? Every adult bookseller's story has death, murder or suicide as a main theme nowadays...are we that depressive as a world?!!?

Not surprising, really. Death has replaced sexuallity as the "new" pornograghy in our society. Think about it. How many euphamisms are there for saying that someone is dead? Passed on. Gone to her reward. Gone to heaven (or maybe burning in h***?). With the angels now. No longer with us. Etcetera.

As a society we are obsessed with anti-aging products from hair dyes to surgeries; the latest psuedo-scientific food trends, excessive exercising, avoidance of daylight/sunshine, anti-hunting,anti-smoking, anti alcohol/drugs, anti-transfat, and so on.

(Not advocating pro or con here. I assume adults can make their own decisions).

Do people think they can escape death if they relegate it to literature? Make death less real? That death won"t "happen" to them? Someone's in for a big surprise. Once death was an accepted and usual occurance in life but we have become more industrialized and moved farther away from the basic realities of life. And new myths are created by people without that basic understanding.

If not for death, we wouldn't have 98% of the mystery/thriller novels currently on the market.

What are you talking about? Blue IS my natural color!

Really though, books about death and dying are some of my favorites. Call me morbid, but I can't help it!
