A further update on my reading of "Where the Red Fern Grows" to fifth grade classes. At the end of each school year I have the students fill our a questionnaire rating the various books and short stories which I read to them over the course of the year. "Red Fern" was the most popular this year. In the written comments several students said that I should definitely read it to the fifth graders this coming school year. One girl said she liked the book so much that she bought her own copy.
Actually, I will not be reading "Red Fern" every school year for the simple reason that it is so long! Our format is once a week for 30 minutes per session, which means it took me more than a semester to get through it. And that in turn means that I have to pass on some other books which are also very worthwhile.
