I had to google Quaich to see what it was, very pretty. I'm considering storing and rotating some of my books so that I'll have a little room for displaying a few things. The responses so far are interesting. I like hearing how people do things differently.

Me too! My husband is a flooring installer and I help him every once in a while...anyway, we are in so many newer homes and see so many different types of design elements, that I always come away with new ideas.
All nine of the 3' x 7' bookcases are packed solid with books - and before moving I purged enough to fill the cargo space of an old Volvo station wagon to the headliner. Twice.
I do have lots of pretty things on the china cabinet, side boards, mantle, several etageres, etc.
Oh, the front edge of most of the book shelves have a good amount of dust and dog hair on them because those 6 darned dogs just grow far more fur than they need, shed it everywhere, and refuse to vacuum.

In addition to my favorite (and only those) books, I have several small elegant clay pots made by New Mexico's Pueblo Indians, a large red rock from New Mexico with a small metal pelican (from Eureka, CA) standing on it, a small wooden box with an inlaid tile elephant from India, a tiny wooden violin from a music venue in Philadelphia, and etc., etc.--little things that remind me of elements of my life experiences that I want to remember. In a way, these things serve the same purpose as my favorite books.
I have photo albums, some craft supplies and some knicks knacks.
