I would strongly suggest "The Art of Racing in the Rain." Told from the point of view of a dog, whom you will come to love very much before the book is over.

My post from StarlaJane's thread:

To me, both Seabiscuit and Watership Down are modern classics.
They are way, way up there.
I also enjoyed Charlotte's Web, The Cricket in Times Square, Winnie the Pooh, and The Black Stallion series.
I will add to this: The Story of Edgar Sawtelle
Sunny, I enjoyed all of your choices, but especially Bunnicula and Where the Wild Things Are.

George Orwell - Shooting an Elephant. A short story rather than a book. Timeless in its scope, especially in today's world. Worth every bit of the minutes it takes to read!

Just one favorite book? It's too hard to pick just one.

I like:

Charlotte's Web by E.B. White
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
Timbuktu by Paul Auster
City by Clifford Simak
My Dog Skip by Willie Morris
