It may not be very book club friendly, but I think The Basketball Diaries was one of the best examples of book to film adaptation ever.

Upcoming film, December 2009 or January 2010:

The Lovely Bones

Except for one jarring event late in the novel, an incident which (to me) simply did not fit, I really, really enjoyed this beautiful yet unsentimental book.

I just saw the movie last night and it is wonderful. I'm going to have to read the book.

Bret Easton Ellis' American Pyscho. A rated R book/movie. May not suit your tastes but I thought both the book and the movie were hilarious.

Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men. Also a rated R book/movie but a compelling read and the movie was very faithful to the book.

Richard Matheson's I am Legend. Very interesting but the movie took a lot of liberties with the story.

Scott Smith's A Simple Plan. Crazy plot but then desperate people do desperate things...

Piers Paul Reid's Alive. Great book because its a true story. Movie was okay.

That opening scene of the movie is terrifying. It haunted me for a good long while.
I agree with you about the rest of the movie, though.

One of my *favorite* books into movies: Roald Dahl's The Witches.
The film perfectly recreates the book. Probably not book club fodder, though.

More adult choices:

Rudyard Kipling's The Man Who Would Be King is an excellent film.
Michael Caine says it is one of his favorites.

One of my own favorite movies is a colorful book by Thomas Berger:
Little Big Man, with Dustin Hoffman.

I loved "Shipping News" the book and they did a great job with the movie. As i was watching it I couldn't believe how close it came to the pictures I had in my head as I was reading the book. One of Kevin Spacey's best performances. IMO

In another thread somebody mentioned "The Green Mile". I have not read the book but did enjoy the movie.

Bourne Trilogy even though the books are quite different from the movies. They both rock in their own way.
