no because then we are leaning towards being a communistic society dont you think ? I dont approve of banning books at all if you dont want to read it then dont it is as simple as that .
Why should we ban books?
Who could choose what books to ban? Nobody has the monopoly of the truth. And the book one would want to ban may be perfectly acceptable to somebody else.
The moment one starts banning or trying to censor a book he will only cause the opposite result.
It's not just Communists who ban or destroy books - the Nazis had a fine old time of burning books in the streets too. Anyway, as a former librarian I don't believe in banning any book no matter how offensive its content might. Firstly, I don't have to read the book. Secondly, if I'm afraid that someone I know will read it so what? It's none of my business, hopefully my friends are smart enough to analyse a book and understand its content and it could always lead to a lively and intelligent discussion. And thirdly, once you start banning where do you stop? And who gets to decide?
Besides, as we all know, once you ban something, the sales of that product go thro the roof and the author or writer or whoever ends up making a boatload of money. Anyone here remember the band Frankie Goes To Hollywood? Their first single, Relax, was banned in the UK and the sales went into the stratosphere, it was a Number 1 hit for months and the band basically retired on their earnings. So who won that game?

Yes, I was just thinking the same but I wasn't quite sure how to express it. You are right on this.
I keep thinking that "The Da Vinci code" would have been a lot less successful if some churches had not made a big fuss about it.
What about the violence that is created due to commentators in the news, due to Nazi material or other hate groups, what about the violence in movies that have caused our nation to become more violent? What about protecting our children until they are old enough to read these things?

Greed and Violence are Siamese twins. How are you going to censor the greed out of movies, TV, etc. etc. etc.
By the time "protecting our children" is accomplished we will have to put the entire present-day American culture under lock and key or into a re-education camp. Those societies that have tried this have ultimately been vicious.
It seems, like it or not, that protecting children will have to be the parents' job...censor you own TV, control your own computer, select your own movies, etc. and stay on top of your kids.
The alternative is the slippery slope into totalitarianism.
I don't say that I agree with every book that is published, but in order to ban a book, one group or individual must be given authority over what others may choose to read.
That is a direct infraction against our freedom of choice, as well as the freedom of speech.
Instead of banning books, persons should educate their young to discern what materials are considered appropriate to a healthy, informed society, and what is considered inappropriate. Social values should be taught so that the constituents of that society may choose accordingly.
If God gives us free will, no person should be allowed to inhibit that gift.
