Tamar Myer (Penn Dutch)
Joanne Fluke (Hannah Swenson)
Jessica Fletcher/David Bain (Murder She Wrote)

Total mind candy, but ridiculously readable.

Ross Thomas. He's been dead for about a decade, but he wrote some of the best mystery/caper novels around. It's interesting how some of his stuff is being resurrected. I'm thinking that, fifty years from now, he'll be considered a major writer in the genre.

Some titles to consider: Chinaman's Chance, Out on the Rim, and Twilight at Mac's Place.

All of books by Agatha Christie and Ngaio Marsh. I know these books were written in the 30s and 40s, but there is a reason they are re-released every few years. They are terrific.

John Sanford's Prey series
J.d. Robb's Death series. J.D. Robb is also Nora Roberts.
Jeffery Dever the Lincoln Rhyme series
For "lite" mysteries I enjoy the Father Blackie books by Andrew Greeley

Default Different kind of writer?

You might try the Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child books. Start with Relic.

Another unusual book is Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. The hero (?) of the books is a serial killer. They funny too.

Some lesser known mystery writers, but excellent IMO:

Julie Smith - New Orleans/Louisiana setting
David Fulmer - turn of the century New Orleans setting
Peter Abrahams - crime fiction/suspense (my favorite: End of Story)
Lisa Unger - psychological suspense/crime thriller (Blackout)

Enjoy!

I love Ruth Rendell. Her dark psychological themes and writing are exquisite.
