Five come to mind immediately:

The Mephisto Waltz

'Salem's Lot

The Ruins

Ghost Story

The Exorcist

I have found that the older I get the less likely it is that I am going to watch a horror movie. However, that is not true of books. I like a good horror book.

it didn't "scare the daylight" out of me (reading Goosebumps and SK books since grade school has toughened me up a bit ), but I did get unnerved quite a bit reading House of Leaves. there are sections of that book that are pretty creepy

I haven't read a good horror novel in ages. Thanks for the reminder - might check one out soon!

Also, I don't remember now what books scared me but my husband always says that The Shining is the one book that scared him - and that it was much better/scarier than the movie.

Not books but two short stories that I thought were very frightening, "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson and "To Build A Fire" by Jack London.

speaking of short stories, "1408" by Stephen King also gave me the creeps. never saw the movie so I'm not sure how it compares, but the story is chilling at times (mainly the voice on the phone).

I agree about "The Lottery" - another scary short story is "The Man in the Black Suit" by Stephen King. His description of the devil sent chills through me. Sometimes I think short stories can be the creepiest of all because you just don't get a break.
