Lisbeth Salander........Steig Larson (Girl with Dragon Tatoo....etc): She is one of the most original characters, and it makes me sad that Steig passed before we saw all twelve of this series! Lisbeth kicks butt.

Lindsay Boxer.......James Patterson (The Women's Detective Agency series) : I know another girl, but she kicks butt too! Love the spin she has on the cases in this series.

James Frey...........as in the James Frey's A Million Little Pieces: I don't care that his memoir was somewhat, ok maybe a lot, fictional the main character in that book has stuck with me for years.

We need to start a list of the most annoying characters, and I am going to stick Bella Swan on that list!

Bob Lee Swagger....Stephen Hunter
Det. Dave Robicheaux....James Lee Burke
Rand, Matt & Perrin in The Wheel of Time series....Robert Jordan
Noah Bishop & Special Crimes Unit (paranormal)....Kay Hooper
Dexter....Jeff Lindsay
Elvis Cole & Joe Pike....Robert Crais
Silent Joe....T. Jefferson Parker
Jesse Stone....Robert B. Parker

Too many books....so little time!
Darn, you named 90 % of my favorite crime novel writers and characters!

I've read every Dave Robicheaux/James Lee Burke novel written to date, as well as all of the Jesse Stone/Robert B. Parker novels. I'm presently reading John Connolly's The Black Angel, with the Charlie Parker character, first of his novels I've read.

If you like the Burke and Robert Parker styles, you may like Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series (if you haven't read them yet!)

Milo Sturgis and Spike - Jonathan Kellerman's Alex Delaware series (although Blanche is growing on me)

Grandma - Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series

Sir Lucan - Rosalind Miles' Guenevere series

Marietta Danver - Jennifer Wilde's Marietta series

Julien - Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches series

But my all-time favorite is:

Lestat de Lioncourt - Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles

My fave is Dr. Alan Gregory from Stephen White's books. Also like Rebecca Bloomfield from the Shopaholic series. When I was younger my favorite series were the different VC Andrews series, and my favorite characters were Heaven Casteel and Troy Tatterton.

I'll second (third?) Alex Delaware and Odd Thomas.

Also LOVE Mallory from the Carol O'Connell books (impatiently waiting the next one), and Munch Mancini from the series by the late Barbara Seranella.

Those I've read from the ones already listed, I agree they are wonderful characters. But I'm surprised no one has mentioned Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus Decker from Faye Kellerman's books.
