Have you thought about Jamaica Plain or Highland Park (Roxbury) in Boston? Both are more urban, offer the kinds of amenities you're looking for and are pretty safe. Though, neither is exactly cheap for a two-bedroom apartment. W. Roxbury is charming, if you like suburbia. And, it has a great Roche Brothers (worth the price of admission alone). But, it's hardly interesting.

BTW: I think you'd be bored to tears in Newton, FWIW. It's great if you like to shop at Whole Foods or go to any number of specialty shops. But, it's snooty, aloof, and very suburban. If you could afford it, I'd say Brookline would be the place for you.

Brookline, for sure. Move to Brookline. Good culture/bookstores, art house cinema, every kind of ethnic food, and, depending on what part of Brookline/BU, a walk to the school.

I think the OP is under the impression that Brookline and Cambridge have nothing to offer but bars. She wants to move to Newton.
