I will be moving to Ma for a new job....a mature professional splitting time between a home in Nj and an apt in Ma. Job is in Southwest Lexington, but want to live near public transportation to get to South station or Back Bay to take Amtrak to NJ on weekends.

looking at an apt in Charlestown that really is east somerville area by Sullivan Sq
vs an apt at Watertown

The watertown location is just by the bus yard, near stores and restaurants
The Somerville/Charlestown is just by the T, but not really near restaurants etc.

How will the two commutes to Lexington compare? seems East Somerville will be tough, with driving thru Cambridge/Somerville at rush hours but Watertown involves lots of small roads up to Lexington area.

i am leaning to the Watertown location, but was wondering about the area---is it safe? will it be convenient to my job in Lexington (i am choosing to live near public transport for easy access to Amtrak).
How reliable are the express buses from Watertown, vs using the orange line to get to amtrak.

I'd say Watertown was nicer than East Somerville, in general.

The express buses are mostly designed for commuters and don't run on Sundays. The downtown bus doesn't run on Saturdays, either. But to get to Amtrak from Watertown, you can also take the local 71 bus to Harvard and then the Red Line to South Station.

the 502/504 express bus from Watertown Yard to Back Bay station is very fast (10-11 minutes) and very punctual. As lz1982 says, though, it doesn't run on Sundays and that may be when you want it to get back from NJ.

thanks, i noticed the weekends don't have the express bus, but i think this will work since i will work some weekdays from NJ so will be commuting primarily during the week.

also how do you think the traffic compares from East Somerville to Lexington vs Watertown to Lexington....the Somerville commute seems painful given the narrow streets, parked cars, bikers, pedestrians and the weird roads winding everywhere....

Commuting from Watertown would definitely be easier. To me, this is really a no-brainer. Watertown is a really nice town...lovely, safe, with easy access to major highways and transportation. Over by Sullivan Square is rather slummy and run-down. I know too many people who have been mugged waiting for the T at Sullivan...not an area I even like to visit, nevermind live.
