Hi, I just got a job in Wilmington and I'm not sure of the best way to find a place to live. I'm looking in the Cambridge/Somerville area. This is my first time moving out of state, so I'm wondering if I should...

option 1) fly in beforehand, stay a few days, find a place to live, then fly back and move

option 2) move, put all my stuff in storage, stay in a hotel for a few days while looking for places to live, find a place, then move everything from storage to my new place

?

Option 1 is better b/c you don't know what you're move-in date would be. I found a place in Somerville and it seems you generally go through a broker around here.

Are you planning to use a broker or go it alone?

If you are going it alone, what's your method? Will you contact landlords before hand to see pictures of a place and set up appointments to see an apartment? I just wanted to make sure you understood that the "drive around and look for Apartment for Rent signs" that is common in other parts of the country isn't really how it's done her.

i'm going to schedule appointments before i move. i start work on sept 27 so, at the worst, I'd be looking at an oct 1 move-in date. i'm looking at ads on craigslist.

Option #1!

Nice places (clean, maintained, off-street parking) will likely require a financial and background check before they will OK you for a lease.

FYI - My son is currently living in Somerville (Cambridge is across the street) and his two BR, two BA unit in a mid-rise building rents for $1,900 per month.

You need to be informed. 1st thing you need to know:

1st month + Last Month + Security Deposit + Broker Fee if you use a broker. IOW, bank on needing two to four months' rent to get a place.

Boston is pricey. Studios start probably minimum $800 per month. Pet friendly is a needle in a haystack.

The other thing is when it comes to viewing a prospective apartment, the best way is to see it one day and rent it by the end of the day if you really want it. They go that fast.
