Hi... I'm a 25 yr old british female who's going to be working at Mass' General Hosp in Boston from September to December.

I need to start to put together a budget for my time out there and am not really sure where to start in terms of the cost of groceries/ weekly shop etc. Any advice? Am hoping to be able to get the most out of the experience and plan on socialising and travelling (funds permitting) also...

Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Cheers!

As you probably know, Boston is expensive by American standards. But compared to London, it is not close. I'm not sure if you are from London or the countryside. I lived in London for awhile and it was VERY expensive coming from the States.

As far as grocery costs go- it depends where you shop. If you want 100% organic at a Whole Foods, expect to easily spend $150 USD + per visit without getting much. If you go to a standard Stop & Shop or Shaws, for a single person I would expect you to spend $75-100/week if you are cooking alot at home.

If you eat out alot, that changes everything. There are alot of good cheap 'eats' but eating out in general, is costly if you do it nearly everyday.

What other details can you share to help narrow it down?

Didn’t realize that you had posted in the Massachusetts forum as well – I posted a response in the Boston sub-forum, but it’s pretty much the same answer.

Could Mass General help you with a room mate, then maybe Cambridge would work. Depending on your work hours you might get a meal discount living there. If you are only 25, you for food should do fine on say 60.00 per week.

why you will be at work a.m. and maybe dinner you will hang out in Boston.
get tea etc frankly you should be busy enjoying Boston. Best of Luck
