My girlfriend and I are looking to gradually move out of city. We currently rent in the South End, but do not want to settle down here. I work downtown, and she works in Waltham.

We are looking to buy either a small single family house, or potentially a larger townhome in the $325-375k range. We're looking for somewhere that is not the city, but is not completely suburban either, where we could live for 5 years or so before making the full leap to suburbia.

Ideally, it would be close to public transportation for me, and within a half hour drive of Waltham. Is there anywhere that has a vibrant downtown area, with shops and restaurants, that is a suburban/urban mix where we could get some space (and hopefully a yard too)??

Arlington, Dedham, Needham, Newton, Waltham, Watertown

All of these communities would meet you requirements, not sure about your budget, however.

Maybe the Hyde Park and West Roxbury sections of Boston too.

Good list, GF. I'll add Brighton--around Brighton Center or Oak Square, or more generally anywhere west of Market St. if you want to avoid the big concentrations of students--and possibly Medford.
