I've googled this and have found a couple of posts where people have been able to take their little Mikes Pastry treasures on the plane with them, with no problems. But I have also read many people that say no - you can't because TSA rules prohibit gels, and pastry cream falls into that category. Before I try to pack the box into my luggage (hoping it won't get squished!) I was wondering if any folks here had had any problems taking cannoli on the plane with them. I bought four as a surprise for my son. I would much rather hand carry them.

As you've found out, it's a tossup. It depends on the agent(s) working security when you get there. I brought a Modern Pastry Cannoli to my girlfriend in San Francisco a few months back (also brought a few extras... you know... just in case we have a casualty). When I had one on the flight, the guy sitting next to me asked how I "snuck" it past security. I said I didn't. He said that he's seen them get confiscated as the filling is considered a gel-like substance. I guess I got lucky.

Personally, I would pack it in my checked bag. Find a way to rig a protective enclosure so they don't get crushed and surround it with clothes. Checked bags stay cooler anyway (less climate control down below).

If you carry it, you run the risk of having it confiscated. It's at the discretion of the TSA agent at the gate and if you get one in a bad mood (or hyper sensitive), you'll lose it.

I agree. It's a tossup. Just traveled last week and wasn't allowed to take my yogurt.

You should buy an extra one so that the TSA can try it.

Yogurt is quite different than cannoli.

I talked to the TSA folks today, at the airport. They said it is perfectly fine to take cannoli on the plane. Heck they said half the people flying out of Logan have a Mike's Pastry box with them.

Well, it was Greek yogurt....pretty similar to the texture of pastry cream actually

But I'm glad you had success with your cannoli! Now I have a sudden desire to head over to the North End this afternoon!
