I'm going to be accepting a job in Cambridge (Davis Square area) and my best friend is going to BU (the health campus near Boston Medical Center not the riverfront campus). We were hoping to find a neighborhood that would be convenient to both of us (we'll both be using public transit) to live together, but the most convenient locations are naturally the very expensive South End and Beacon Hill.

Does anyone have suggestions for relatively affordable (for Boston anyways) neighborhoods that are accessible to both areas we'll be working?

Thanks!

East Somerville/Sullivan Square. Sullivan Station (Orange Line) is a straight shot on the subway to Mass Ave Station in the South End, which is about six blocks from BU Medical Campus. The 90 bus to Davis Square also stops at Sullivan.

The West Side of South Boston. Broadway Station (Red Line) is a straight shot on the subway to Davis, and the 47 bus to BU Medical Campus also stops at Broadway.

You migth also check Cambridgeport or around Central Square in Cambridge. The same 47 bus goes there and it's easily accessible to Davis. It may be more expensive than some other places named but if you live farther from Central, closer to the river, perhaps it would work.

I second the cambridgeport recommendation. I don't personally find the area near Sullivan Square to be somewhere I'd want to live. Your friend could take the 47 and you could walk up to the Central Square T stop and take the train three stops to Davis.

South Boston may not be ideal, but it's not a horrible idea. It's obviously closer for your friend (bus) than you (redline train at Broadway or Andrew), but it might be a little cheaper and the redline would be direct.
