My wife and I and two kids are visiting Boston in July, looking for cost-efficient place to stay, and found somewhere in Medford. Is this a "nice" town? Safe? Quiet? Residential? Easy to get to downtown Boston? We are not accustomed to public transportation, so will we feel comfortable here? Thank you.

Well first Medford isn't a town, it's a small city. it's a fairly nice and pretty safe, though not really quiet. It's easy to get to boston using a car and a little more inconvenient to use the T. How long will you be staying? are you going to use a car mostly to get around?

Staying just a week, and was hoping to use public transportation. Also just found a great houseboat in the Boston Harbor that would be IDEAL, and LOTS of fun, but almost 3 times the cost.

It depends where you are in Medford; some parts are more urban and others more suburban. MBTA.com allows you to put in an address and see what public transit routes are nearby. There's only one subway stop in Medford (Wellington) so if you are near that, it's easy to get into Boston. If not, you are looking at a bus-to-subway commute that is much less convenient for a tourist.

I guess it depends how good you want your stay to be. If you want it to be really good I'd go for the houseboat, if you want it to be pretty good but don't have high expectations and want to save money I would choose Medford. There's nothing wrong with it, but not many people choose to spend their vacation there.
