I wanted to start by saying I appreciate all the replies. We miss seasons BAD ! and we're sick of 100+ degree days. Granted, I haven't seen significant snow since I was a kid visiting Ohio but I'm fairly sure I'd love it. I always loved snow and would prefer -10 to 110.

They are permanent jobs. To be honest, I grew up in Tampa with an area population of 2-3 million.. then moved to Nashville (700k) and thought it to be pretty small and country but after moving to Houston and dealing with 6.5 million people on a daily basis, I'm ready to head back down to smaller populations, I've come to find that people are pretty self absorbed and full of themselves and dealing with 6 million of them (4 of which doesn't speak english) has really worn down my nerves.

Again, I really appreciate the replies!

Brockton is a tad far from Boston. It is an old mill town that has/mabye lost it's sheen.

Lynn is another old mill town but closer to Boston. Lynn has some tough sections but others near Saugus or other surrounding towns are just fine. Lynn has a large General Electric plant. Lynn is also closer to Nahant beach and some other ocean beaches.

Massachusetts is sometimes knicked named Taxachusetts. Taxes and fees do add up.

A lot of history is in the area. And lots of cultural activities and such.

Yeah, I would strongly recommend against Brockton and Lynn if you find immigrants speaking different languages intolerable because both cities have large immigrant populations. That's the only thing I miss about Lynn. In the townhouse block I lived in, there were people from Cuba, Nigeria, and Egypt!

Lynn and Brockton are not parts of Boston. I seem to see a lot of people around here in MA who call "Boston" various towns when they aren't. It's common among the non-city people to do this ("I live in Boston." Um no, Revere is not Boston). The neighborhoods of Boston are as follows in no particular order: Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Financial District, Chinatown, Downtown Crossing, South Boston, South End, North End, Roslindale, Hyde Park, Roxbury, Mattapan, Dorchester, West Roxbury. Across the river is the City of Cambridge. Common neighborhoods you'll see are Harvard Sq., Central Sq., Kendall Sq., East Cambridge, Cambridgeport, Inman Sq. Somerville is the city next to Cambridge & includes such neighborhoods as Davis Sq, Union Sq., Winter Hill, Teele Sq. There's also Brookline, a town next to Boston. I just mention so you look for these keywords when you are looking for places to live, assuming you are truly looking to be in "Boston," or very very close. You might do a google search on the various neighborhoods I mention to get more detailed info.

Parts of Lynn are fine. I used to drive down Peary Ave. every day to/from work. Not a bad area. West Lynn is fine. Also some nice areas close to the water near Swampscott. I'd avoid downtown, and some areas around Western Ave seem sketchy. I've never lived in Lynn, but have lived in surrounding towns over the years (Saugus, Swampscott, Peabody, etc.)

We're renters and not really looking to buy a house at the moment but I've done the usual craigslist search and found several 2BR apartments and houses for rent between $600/$1000 mo. One is on Brunswick Street in Brockton, One is on Peary Ave. in Lynn. I'm just wondering if it's really possible to find rents in this range or if it's basically a scam ?

We're really excited about the thought of getting the hell out of here and getting back into seasons and real winter weather.

Thanks for any information provided.
I agree with the others who say that Brockton and Lynn are places to ... skip. I would suggest checking out rentals in Framingham, Natick, and Marlborough. I like Beverly, and there is a commuter rail stop (maybe two?), and you might find rents within your budget. I'd prefer to live in Beverly than Lynn any day of the week.
