hi,
we're visiting Boston in about a month and wanted to get your advice on the areas to stay.
I'm looking on Priceline and i'm selecting the following areas when bidding:

Boston Waterfront - Convention Center
Quincy Market - Faneuil Hall - Financial

Are these basically the places i want to get my hotel if i don't have a car?
should i get a car?

if i do stay in one of the above two areas, will i be able to explore easily and see all the attractions by foot or metro? (how's the metro?)

any other info appreciated!

cheers!

A car is a liability in Boston. You can cover most of the places worth seeing on foot, and can take the T to the rest.

The Back Bay near Boston Common and the public garden is the most central location, but others are good too. Long Wharf is a great location and so is Faneuil Hall. The Financial District is also. The Convention Center is a bit out of the way to most stuff.

Add Theater Dist to that list, and save Seaport/Water Front/Convention Center as a last resort. Although nice in the summer, it's a bit empty compaired to the other neighborhoods.

The Convention center is about a ten block walk back into town - fine, but slightly inconvenient. Fanueil Hall is the very heart of the city. Best place in town to stay. Back Bay is second, or others may opin, actually 1st.

so, from these areas, which ones would you consider the best place to stay (hotel). Considering, we don't have a car and want to be in a fancy/walkable/clean/alive area!

Boston Harbor Front - Aquarium
Boston Waterfront - Convention Center
Brighton - Brookline
Cambridge
Copley Square - Theatre District
Fenway Park
Medford-Somerville
North Cambridge - Arlington
Quincy Market - Faneuil Hall - Financial
Revere - Logan Airport
South Boston

There is also the option of taking the Silver Line from the convention center to South Station. It's not true rapid transit, but it is a free transfer to the rest of the subway, and since it's an underground bus, you are protected from the elements while waiting. Just the same, I concur with you and everybody else, though, that the Convention Center is not the best area for a tourist since it is a bit more remote.
