I'm a college student trying to transfer to UMass Boston for the '12-'13 year. I'm trying to get a head start on apartment searching so I don't stress over it so much later. My boyfriend and I will be moving together, and we are looking for a 2BR that allows dogs (we have two). We aren't opposed to living outside the city as long as there is somewhat easy transport access. I have a car, but I think it would probably be a pain in the arse to use in the city. I'm looking for something that is about 850 maximum, preferably with heat included. Also, I'd like to be somewhere that is moderately safe.

Any ideas where I might be able to find anything kind of like this?

Thanks
Andrea

Where did you get the idea that was a realistic budget? Just curious... With two dogs your options will be limited enough but I hate to break it to you but you are several hundred dollars off a decent place on the T...

Why not live in the dorms and lose the dogs?

UMass Boston doesn't have dorms.

I'm completely unfamiliar with the Boston area and the cost of living. Sorry, I was just throwing out a number =/
The apartment we have now, in a vacation town, is only 650 and a 2br, and its not totally crappy. I suppose I was just being too optimistic...

A decent two bedroom is going to be start at more like $1500...do you truly need two bedrooms? You might find a one bedroom for $1100-ish.

I suppose we don't need, need two bedrooms, but it's certainly preferable. Is it that high priced to live outside the city? Like I said, I wouldn't entirely mind using my car to get to and from school

If you need a 2BR, expect prices to start around $1300, at a minimum. This probably won't include heat/hot water, either. I think that you might want to consider a spacious one bedroom place.

Avoid areas such as Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan; consider areas such as Somerville ( Red Line), Allston-Brighton( Green Line), as these would probably be closer to your budget limitations. Cambridge and Newton are nicer, but more expensive. You might also consider Quincy ( to the south), which has several stops on the Red Line.

If you want to stick closer to your budget (though you will absolutely need to increase it) and keep your commute to school within reason, I'd look into Quincy or maybe Braintree. However, a good commute for you can be a terrible one for your boyfriend. Will he be working or going to school? If it's the former, what field is he in?

If you cannot increase your budget, you might want to consider a share in an apartment/house to cut down on cost.

I always suggest looking at apartments on Craigslist (you can plug in any of the neighborhoods/cities mentioned already) so you can get an idea of the housing stock in the Boston area. Coming from a place with an inexpensive cost of living, you are probably in for some sticker shock.

As someone said, the dogs will also be an issue...in addition to the fact that they simply *are,* the question of what *breed* they are will also factor into the equation...
