Hi,

According to google maps, it should take 4 hours from where I live in Arlington to where my brother lives in Brooklyn. But if I leave on Thanksgiving morning, does anyone know how long I should expect the journey to take?

Thanks for your help!!
Allison

Thanksgiving morning most people should already be at their destination. Especially all the college kids who exit the city as soon as school lets out.

One thing I can suggest for sure, do not attempt this on Wednesday afternoon. It could conceivably take 6 to 8 hours to get to NYC.

Thursday should be fine traffic wise. I would figure roughly what google maps, maybe even a little better. Most everyone should be at their destinations, almost no work traffic, and no constructions, so as long as you don't get stuck behind an accidents it should be pretty easy. I make a similar trip from time to time and it usually takes me about 3:45

Leave by 7 and you should be there by noon. Only problem is, the Thanksgiving morning strategy is less and less of a "secret." I used to love catching flights to Ohio on Turkey Day. The mobs had left the day before, the terminal was quiet, the planes were nearly empty. Where did those days go?

This year it was actually cheaper to go by way of connecting flights on Wednesday night. Even now I'm going to have to fly into and out from an airport 50 miles away in order to keep it affordable. Prices for Thursday were every bit as, ahem, sky high as they were for Wednesday. In recent years the Thanksgiving-morning planes were filled to capacity and so was Logan.

But I digress. Highway traffic should still be less heavy in the AM on the day, compared to the night before when there can be 2-hour back-ups at the Mass Pike interchange in Sturbridge. (NO exaggeration.) Choose the Triboro Bridge or one of the Bronx-Queens bridges (Whitestone, Throgs Neck) when you hit the city, then approach by the BQE or LIE and you ought to be fine. Just be sure to fill the tank before crossing the Arlington line.
