My aunt lives in the Boston area. She needs to sell some (barely used) luxury items such as furs and diamond jewelry for cash.

I sold some jewelry myself a few years ago when I lived in NJ. The place is called Portero, they're located in NYC they have an online site. see website here fyi

Because some of the furs are so heavy she doesn't want to ship them to Portero in NYC. Does anyone know of a similar option in Boston/Massachusetts? I was thinking there might be shops located in the downtown crossing area -- maybe antique or consignment type shops -- but something with an online presence such as Portero would be wonderful. In any event, my poor aunt really needs to sell these items. The economy has hit her finances harder than I'd ever imagined possible. (Please don't judge her for the furs...her ex husband was Canadian)

Ebay just doesn't seem like a viable option as she's never sold on ebay before. I can't imagine anyone would buy expensive items from an ebay seller who doesn't have any feedback (no 100% feedback score)

Thank you so much for any insight/suggestions!

What does being Canadian have to do with owning/giving furs?

Why not go visit her for the holidays and then take the train to NYC with all of her treasures and sell them at the store you pitched 4 times as being great?

I'll attempt to explain my statement re: Canadians and furs

1. It's impossibly cold in many parts of Canada
2. Canadians don't seem to have the PETA mentality about fur
3. when I've been to Canada in the winter, I was surprised at how many men and women were wearing gigantic fur coats

I'm looking for a local to Boston place. I can't take my aunt to NYC.

City Guy has a good point. Why don't you ask if your aunt wants to let you take her stuff to NYC (it's a 4-5 hr drive from BOS and there are buses/trains that goes there) to that place you mentioned. It's a day's worth of work (maybe 2).

For all that trouble, you subtract expenses and whatever you and her agree ahead of time that is reasonable from the proceeds. If she doesn't trust you with the stuff, then oh well.

I'd add that many French canadian settlements (pre 1763) were made up with fur trappers. You have to remember that petroleum based products didn't exist (polyester) and cotton cannot grow during the winter so you kinda make due with what you have.

There's plenty of places that will take jewelry. Even scrap gold can yield high amounts..silver not as much. I'd add do NOT do that "Cash for gold" thing by the mail. They rip people off.

Here is one place that allows trade ins of furs and appraisals.
Suphi Furs - Expert Furrier Since 1975

Here's another that sells but I'm not sure if they buy..maybe they have more information
M. Miller | Skiwear and Outerwear for Women

Try Portero in NYC. I hear they offer competitive prices and have a user-friendly Web site. Whenever I need to sell furs, there's only one name I trust. Portero.
