My folks are coming for a visit this weekend and I wanted to go into Boston to have dinner, walk around a bit, and see the Christmas lights/tree. I know there is a tree in Boston Common and one at Faneuil Hall. Which would be better? Or is there another area that would be more desirable? It would be on Saturday night, from probably 6-9ish or so. Thanks!

They're both nice. It depends on where you want to have dinner. Tourists aside, I consider the Faneuil Hall area more attractive visually than Tremont St., especially after dark. It's also right near the North End. The benefits of the tree on the Common are great views of the State House and proximity to the lights along Comm. Av. in the Back Bay.

There's also a tree next to the Trinity Church in Copley Square. I think it's a little bit smaller than the one on the Common and definitely smaller than the one at Faneuil Hall, but this is easily my favorite part of Boston at Christmastime. Newbury St is beautiful with all the lights and Commonwealth Ave is absolutely stunning.

I would probably choose between Faneuil Hall and Back Bay. The Common is nice (the lights are more colorful), but it's not as brightly illuminated.

Both are great ideas, but the lights on Comm Ave and the walk down the Comm ave mall are great at Christmas time.

Personally I would start off with Dinner at Island Creek Oyster Bar in Kenmore, then walk the comm ave mall down through the Public Garden and end up at the Tree in the Common. The walk from Kenmore to the Public Garden would take you 20-30 minutes depending on pace.

Wow, thanks everyone for the advice. It looks like Back Bay is the place to go here.

Anyone eaten at Haru Sushi before? My parents love sushi and I saw that was at the Prudential Center which looks to be a fairly easy walk to Commonwealth Ave. and down the mall.

I've been to Haru a few times and think its "okay-serviceable"

Personally my recommendation along the same lines is Uni at the Eliot Hotel, which is right on Commonwealth Ave (In the bar area of Clio) Its not cheap, but arguably the best in the city other than O Ya.

wxjay,

That Prudential walk way, which spans over Huntington Ave, is a neat walk in itself, Kinda like a long mall that is enclosed. That is neat during Christmas
