as of now, i am currently living right outside of the city. i moved here with my husband about 4 months ago. it seemed like a nice quiet area and a decent apartment, so we leased it. before we moved in, our landlord said that he would clean up the apartment. didn't do a thing. we spent hours and hours for a few days cleaning and scrubbing every surface and corner so that it was suitable to live and and to get rid of that strange smell. a few days later, it smells again! no mother what we do, we can't get rid of it! now it has been like this for four months!the mold in the bathroom just doesn't go away. we clean it with bleach and it does almost nothing. the weekend before we moved here, there was a huge storm that knocked down a couple trees. we notified our landlord immediately and it took him until after christmas to actually do something about it! our neighbor who resides on the third floor, right above us, says that they do not shovel when it snow although that is in the lease agreement. one of the first couple weeks of living here, our apartment door broke, and WE had to fix it! also, we have been seeing mice more frequently, cleaning up its/their fur on the carpets, hearing them at night in the walls and heaters, and, again, we notified our landlord and he refuses to do anything about it. yesterday, i spoke with our neighbor the floor above us and i was told that there has been a history of break ins at this address and also the cars in the driveway. that has me worried. also, the apartments on the first floor are vacant and have been for a couple years, so i am told by said neighbor. what are they hiding? they don't show it to possible tenants(us or anyone else who looked at our apartment before we moved in) and the rent is oddly inexpensive for right outside of boston. is there anything i can do to get out of here without any legal issues? or am i stuck here for another 8 months?

Dude, I thought my apt was bad, reading yours mine now is like a dream-house. The mice problem is a health code violation. Write them a letter telling them they have a week to fix it and if they don't, you will withhold rent payment to pay for professional pest control. Also you can get the town health inspector in and he will issue a citation if the problem isn't fixed. If it's bad, he can condemn the place which helps you get out of the least.

My LL was also ignoring my mice problem and when I did that, he got the next cheapest exterminator in (at least whatever poison he put down worked).

Contact the board of health about the infestation and mold issues. You can't just withold rent on your own.

If the house has actual code violations that the landlord has been made aware of AND refusing to correct, per MGL Chapter 230 Section 8A, YES YOU CAN!

This type of situation scars me. I am no lawyer but my advice would be to submit any and all future communications to your landlord in writing and keep record of them. If your landlord continues to ignore his obligations and/or your reasonable requests for repairs, report his ass to authorities (health dept, building codes, etc). Also, some people call their local TV station to put their landlords on blast for not holding up their end of the bargain. If your situation is bad enough, it just may make it as a story on the evening news and I am sure your land lord would just love that publicity. In the mean time, for your mold situation, keep the air in your apartment moving with fans. The mold will have a hard time growing if air is moving throughout your place. Mold thrives in stagnant air. Good luck and do not be afraid to report that landlord!

OP.... Mold in the bathroom...Where?

Its it just around the bathtub, the whole wall, etc.? Just opening the window after showering may help if the problem is high humidity. If there's a leak causing the mold, then nothing you can do will stop it unless the leak is fixed in the first place.
