Boston is no less vibrant in the winter than any other city that experiences cold weather and snow. Which is pretty much every region with the exception of Florida, Southern CA and a few select other regions.

Boston is very pretty with a light snow. There is skating on Frog Pond during the winter for example which is nice.

Boston is always busy, no mater what. It has a massive CBD which means there are always people in the city. Walk through Downtown Crossing and no matter the month, there are always a large amount of people out and about.

The best time for weather, if you like warmer weather, is May through October. The weather is great. April and November can also be nice as well.

What is a CBD?

To the original poster:

Boston (NE in general) had a very light/warm winter so this question might not be answered the same way as it would have in past years!

CBD = Central Business District.

There won’t be as much outdoors activity during the winter, but there are plenty of people out moving around between all the activities taking place indoors. Doesn’t matter whether it’s a mild winter like this year’s, a normal winter, or an unusually cold winter. Major cities don’t close down completely outside of the prime tourist season the way small resort towns do.

About the only time the city really feels deserted (depending on where you live) is when the college kids are gone. I used to live in Brookline right at St. Mary's St. and Beacon St. and during Thanksgiving and Christmas time the neighborhood felt kind of deserted. I actually kind of preferred it that way though. I was working as a musician at the time so when the rest of my building was empty I loved the solitude and quiet and got A LOT done. Not to mention the line at 7/11 was drastically reduced. In and out in 45 seconds

The only areas of Boston that get quieter when a large number of students head home for break are Allston/Brighton and Fenway. The rest of Boston is busy no matter what. Plus, the busiest months in Boston for tourists is Mid April through Mid October.

It may seem quieter on the streets but the bars are still filled. I personally love all the seasons and the food/drink that goes along with them. Anything from sitting on a Patio at a bar near fenway, enjoying some summer ale or crammed into a bar on Canal Street with nowhere to put my coat, crushing some Molson before a Bruins game.

I'm not very fond of winter either, especially when it is bitter cold weather. Places like Chicago, NYC also have harsh winters, Chicago is actually worse from what I was told, but people still go out, they just do more indoor activities instead.

Boston has more than "light snow". Some years it's like snow. Some years it's 90 inches.
