What do you mean by downtown? Main St? You need to check out the South Side as well. I think the restaurants around Moody St from the Common south to the Newton border are more diverse with more substance than those in the trendy Davis Square area. Davis Square is what Harvard Square was 10-20 years ago and I have no doubts it will become what Harvard Square is now in the not too distant future. You have additional urban amenities such as Russo's nearby but you can make a quick getaway to lusher pastures by simply crossing 128. You also have quick access to highways that towns like Arlington or Sudbury do not have.

Tell her to live in Somerville, that's the best option in reference to commute time
