I loved going to these places in the late 80s/early 90s…

Bertha Cool
The Channel
Allston Beat
The Closet Upstairs
Stairway to Heaven (more for the heavy metal crowd, if memory serves, but I remember buying a huge James Dean poster there)
Oona’s (in Harvard Square), which I believe is still open (?)

What else along these lines comes to mind from the 80s and 90s?

The Rat!

I was also a big fan of Axis and Man-Ray (although more goth/industrial). Sad to see these venues close.

And yes Oona's is still open.

Without question, the Rat. When it was bulldozed to make way for Hotel Commonwealth, I died a bit inside.

The Abbey Lounge at the fringe of Inman Square in more ways than one...amazingly it held on until no more than 3 years ago. Now it's a typical Inman Square pseudo-dive, infested with hipsters and renamed Starlite.
Hubba Hubba in Central Square is on the endangered list - owner is retiring.
Oona's IS still there; not only that, there's a second location in...Inman Square...that just recently opened.
Does nobody else remember Cantone's but me?
And, speaking of endangered lists, all the used-record stores are dying off one by one. The latest to bite the dust is Loony Tunes.

Loony Tunes is gone? Wow, I was just in there a few months ago. Too bad. Their prices where always on the high end though.

When did the Rat close down? I have some older cousins who went to college in Boston during the mid to late 90s that speak very fondly of the place.

2000(ish). I used to work at Fenway in the mid 90's and often stopped in for a beer before getting on the train.

A bucket of Rolling Rocks was $6 if I remember correctly. Won't find those prices around anymore.

The Rat was a craphole - but that was part of the charm I guess. I'd say The Middle East and TT the Bears also - I saw plenty of hardcore shows there.

Oh dear does this bring back memories! I used to shop at The Allston Beat outlet type store down on Brighton Ave. Used to buy my Manic Panic there. I bought most of my clothes at the AMVET down by there. Sigh....the old days.
Spent many a drunken night at The Rat. They had the best jukebox ever. Miss late night drunken pizza at Captain Nemos.
Does anyone remember the guy who was always upstairs at Axis? He always wore leather shorts and I think he had a mustache. It seemed like he was there every single time I went.

I was/am a long term fan of the Cantab in central square. Sleazy cool place in its day. Been to the Rat a few times way back and I do remember those beer prices
