I am moving from NJ to the Cambridge area. I tried getting auto insurance quotes and I am being quoted 2.5 times what I am paying in Jersey!! Am I doing something wrong? Will the rates fall if I get insurance after getting a MA driver's license? (I have a NJ license now..)

I have a spotless 10 year driving record. Paying $1000 / year in NJ for decent liability and comprehensive / collision to Geico..

Geico, Liberty Mutual and Amica all quote $2300 - $2500 for a West Cambridge address..

Those quotes do seem a bit high. I don't currently have a car, but when I first moved here I did. I came from New Haven, CT and actually saw a bit of a drop in my rate. I think I was paying about what you were in NJ though when I came to MA. I had something like 50k/100k on most things, with comprehensive and collision at moderate deductibles. It might have something to do with not having a MA license, but I am not sure. I also am not in W. Cambridge, but in Roslindale, but I can't imagine that the amount would differ that much.

actually, one of the agencies gave me a quote lower by 25% when I tried an Arlington address..
I hope the real rates will be much lower when I trade my NJ license for a MA one.

Try Progressive. I switched to them about 4 years ago from Commerce, and my rate was cut in half. It's climbed since then, but they're still competitive.

I'm in Southie btw. And not the best of driving records either.

You'll have to convert your NJ license to a MA when you move here. Your auto insurance rates will be affected by where you decide to live in MA. Arlington and the suburbs are considered a lower risk area to own a car than in Boston, Cambridge and Somerville which are more urban in tone.

And what kind of car do you have? If it's considered a high theft risk, then that would account for your high insurance quotes.

And what deductible amount are you selecting? The lower your deductible, the higher your rate.
