We are thinking about taking a trip up to the Boston area this summer, maybe 4 or 5 days. We would like to visit Martha's Vineyard and go whale watching.

It's a long drive from where we live and are thinking of flying into the Boston area.

Anybody have any suggestions as to should we rent a car or maybe take a bus tour out to the island?

Money is a factor so we would like to keep costs down if possible.

Thanks!

Welcome to Boston (when you arrive). I highly recomend renting from the air port. There are a few companys that are reachable by a bus that is free that goes from terminal to the T and to the rental areas. Car definatly gives you more control over your time than a bus. You can bring the car on the ferry to the Island as well. It does cost, but not sure how much. Hope we are good to you.

If you are going to visit the city for a portion of your trip, you will not need a car at all. Boston is a very compact and walkable city and we also have a pretty good transit system. There are certain things outside the city worth visiting that would be tricky without a car, but a standard Boston itinerary could easily be done sans a car.

Also, you can go whale watching right from Boston. Boats leave right by the Aquarium.

If you are planning on going to the Vineyard, it would be possible to do it without a car. Buses go from Boston down to Woods Hole (in Falmouth) right near the island ferries.

If cost is a concern, I would ditch the car. First, when you're in Boston you won't need a car. Public transportation is great and it's also a very "walkable" city.

Taking a bus to the MV ferry is also a great idea. You can take a car over to MV on the ferry, but I would definitely recommend making an advanced reservation for that. Those spots fill up fast too. You could risk going stand by but good luck if you do that. Taking the ferry to MV is far easier if you don't need to take your car.
