Native Texan here. I don't really think there are any good ones downtown. Maybe something's popped up. However, my boyfriend just brought me some BBQ sauce---just the sauce-- from a place called Blue Ribbon (in Newton, I think). I liked it. I stopped eating BBQ after my first semester of college here and I've since gone pescetarian (that should tell you something.)

Do you have a car? There is a Blue Ribbon on Washington Street (Route 16) in West Newton. There is another Blue Ribbon on Mass Ave in Arlington. Both are accessible by bus, but car is a lot more convenient. Smoken Joes in Brighton (Smoken' Joe's BBQ Brighton | Sandwiches, American, Chicken | Order Online | 351 Washington St) is another good one.

Bison County on Moody Street in Waltham is great. Accessible by bus and train, but again, car would be more convenient.

Fireflys in Framingham (car only).

Try Sweet Cheeks on Boylston by Fenway. Really though, Bbq is not a local culinary strength.

Red Bones in Davis Square - very accessible by T. It's not "the best" BBQ ever, but it's a fun atmosphere and decent enough.

If I recall correctly, a friend of mine from Nashville recently recommended this place. Said it reminded her of Nashville BBQ.

Blackstrap in Winthrop is an easy ride from Boston.

If you love your BBQ hot and spicy, the East Coast Grill in Inman Square would be perfect for you. My friends who live in Somerville go there all of the time, and never bother going to Redbones.

Hell Night
