Thank you for the all the ***positive*** responses so far - the figure of "$1,600 for a studio" was simply a hypothetical figure on my part- I have lived in San Francisco and NYC - I've paid high rents for almost half my life. Yes, I will be taking a quick visit to Boston in a month to check out potential neighborhoods in a month or so - I very much appreciate the info/help!! I was mainly seeking "lifestyle" answers as to where the "non-college" neighborhoods are, that's, all as a woman in her thirties. THANK YOU!!

I'll just throw out there that I rent a one bedroom in the South End for exactly that amount. Second story of a brownstone, in the aforementioned "northeastern part near the Back Bay". It can be done.

that guys onebedroom is a) probably pretty old and unrenovated or b) has no parking included or c) is tiny. Sorry but that's the reality. Look into brookline or south boston

im sorry but you can't get a decent 1bed in the city under 2000. Not anymore. Google it there was an article recently about rent hikes for all downtown neighborhoods (back bay, s. End, beacon hill, even fenway). Note my word: ''decent''

Agreed, you can DEFINITELY find something nice for 1600. I have been looking at places, and there are TONS of nice apts in West Roxbury, and Roslindale which would be perfect for you. Plus the parking in these two neighborhoods are WAY easier than the south end. You could even get a 2 bedroom in that price range in these neighborhoods.

I would try to stay as close to Centre Street as you can, and preferably not too far north or south - places within walking distance of the Stonybrook or Green Street stops on the Orange Line are better choices than places near Jackson Square or Forest Hills.
She mentioned low crime as a must. JP definitely has nice sections, but the area as a whole has a fairly high crime rate.

I am not going to get into an argument, but I would not call the North End a bar scene area. If you live right on Hanover Street, it will be loud. But there are plenty of small, quite streets in the neighborhood. There are also plenty of nice, quaint cafes and restaurants in there as well.
