Just like the thread title says, I'm trying to get a sense for how common it is in the Boston area for an apartment building to have a live-in apartment manager/landlord/superintendent. Perusing apartment listings, it seems like most apartment buildings are managed from offiste by property management companies rather than an on-site apartment manager. Is that accurate?

Not as common as NY.
Apartment "complexes" may have an onsite maintenance office--these are the larger 'burb ones (i.e. any place from the Avalon company).
Newer condo/apartment complexes may offer concierge to distinguish themselves (i.e. my old building in Trilogy had security/concierge - not really sure what they did besides sit at the desk).

Ni-i-i-i-i-c-c-e apartment/condo buildings in Beacon Hill/Back Bay have full service (concierge, etc.) (i.e. 17 Beacon St).
