Hi all,

My wife and I are moving to Boston later this year from DC. She's going to working in Boston, near the State Street T stop; I'm going to be working near Harvard Square. We're currently trying to figure out where to live. We have a strong preference for living in Boston proper, as we've both previously lived in Cambridge and want to try something new. We're interested in the South End; I'm wondering what my commute would be like. It seems like the T would not be the most convenient option as I'd likely have to switch lines. I can pay for parking at work; it isn't cheap, but I'm willing to do it if it would save me time. Can anyone tell me what the drive would be like? Obviously the traffic in the mornings in Boston/Cambridge isn't great; I'd like to think that this would be a little bit of a counter-commute, so it might not be as bad as going the other way. How long a drive could I expect? Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

If you're within walking distance to Mass Ave, your best bet is the no. 1 bus. It runs up Mass Ave to Harvard Sq. It would probably take 20-25 min.

Exactly what I was going to say. When I met my wife she lived in Harvard Square and we took that bus all the time into Boston. Very convenient and you don't have to pay for parking. In warmer weather, I would think biking to work would also be a very easy and pleasant way to commute.

I was going to say the same thing about the #1 bus. That stretch of Mass Ave can be maddening during rush hour so the drive won't be any faster than the T, just more aggravating. Better to have the bus driver deal with it than you behind the wheel. If you bike at all, the trip down Mass Ave is a fairly quick one -- quicker than bus or driving during rush hour traffic.

Another option: Living in Back Bay near Mass Ave would get you a tad closer to Harvard Square, closer to the Mass Ave bus, and your wife could take the Green Line to Government Center.
