I guess "the point" is that not everyone can afford neighborhoods that are universally excellent from top to bottom. Where would you recommend that the OP look instead, that will cost the same but be significantly nicer?

"Nice" bumping up against "crap" is a reality of city living. Good and interesting people exist in neighborhoods of all kinds. Not to halo polish (much), but I count among my friends from nearby not only individuals who don't "look like me" but some who have homes way out of my price range and others who have subsidized rents. Relentless conformity doesn't work for a lot of people. Neither do assumptions based on economic class and other superficial criteria. What exactly is so wrong with having dollar stores and check-cashing places close by? My community is none the worse for housing and supporting "have-nots" alongside the "haves."
