Hi -
We're looking at buying a house in Brookline Village, but are worried about the commute (driving) from that part of the city.

Since we'll be there for many years, we're not thinking of the commute to any specific town, but in general how bad are the rush-hour drive times to some of the popular areas for software companies (we're both programmers): Waltham, Bedford/Lexington, East Cambridge.

From that part of Brookline, we'd probably be taking Route 9 to get eastbound in the mornings, and I have no idea what Route 9 looks like at rush hour. Also, I know the pike is an absolute nightmare coming into the city in the mornings, but I don't know how bad the reverse commute is.

Anyone out there have experience with getting in and out of Brookline Village at rush hour?
Thanks!

Do you mean Rt 9 WEST to get to Rt. 95/128? Taking it east will put you into Boston. Speaking from personal rush hour experience (I live in Coolidge Corner), going west on Rt 9 in the AM isn't too bad since it's a reverse commute. However, it does back up in the Newton Highlands area about a 1.5-2 miles prior to the 95/128 on ramps. I used to always exit Rt 9 at the beginning of the back up so I don't know how bad it really is. From my understanding, 128 is usually pretty backed up in the morning.

Rt 9 going east into Boston will be busy in the AM. But I don't know why you'd have to go that way to get to the places you listed.

Going to East Cambridge, I would cut through Brookline and catch Storrow by BU or Memorial Drive via the BU Bridge (although would you be driving?)

If you want to catch the Pike west, I'd cut through Coolidge Corner and catch it by Cambridge Street in Allston.

I don't know how the whole commute will be, but getting out of the Brookline Village area will obviously have some congestion, but it should be okay.
