Duxbury is supposedly be considerably better than Norwell in terms of schooling. If this is a concern, then I would not choose Norwell. I'm not sure as to why you are eliminating Norwell. I've seen better prices in Duxbury than Norwell for the lower end of the market. I could actually afford something livable in Duxbury versus Norwell. However, the property taxes are already high in Duxbury. If you want Norwell, then I would look more there. Different things do come on the market. It is a hodgepodge of new and old. There are lower priced homes in Norwell and houses with unjustifiable prices.

Why do you have to be in a town with the beach? You could live in Norwell and drive to a beach. It will cost more. Some of the towns have rules which seem to confuse non-residents and limit some of the accessibility, but you have to be allowed access to the beach.

"Not the best area" of Duxbury is still very desirable, at least in my book. We have a young family and the neighborhoods off Bay Rd, adjacent to Rte 3 we found up and coming. There are still some cottage/beach cabin type of houses, but for us, it allows us to get in the market before all of the house are bought up and improved upon, building some equity in the neighborhood. The new high school being built is another thing that attracted us to the area. As far as having a beach in our community, my wife and I both grew up in coastal New England towns (with town beaches) and there is a different feel to the coastal towns vs. the towns just a few miles inland, which we put high on our priority list. I think we've pretty much decided on Dux after our visit this Monday, now we just need to find the right house.

Are there any alternate routes to get around route 3 that are feasible? I used to drive up to the NY/CT border through Greenwich and Stamford when the Merritt was gridlocked, I was hoping someone may have done this before on Rte 3 and could offer some insight.

Hi OP - I am in Fairfield Co. now and can absolutely attest to the horrific traffic on the Merritt. A dead squirrel can cause major slowdowns.

Although I can't comment about specific Duxbury logistics (e.g. backroads), I did run it through Google's Traffic Estimator tool. Not sure if this link works but here it is anyway: Duxbury, MA to World Trade Center - Google Maps

It looks like a best case scenario car commute would take you about 40 minutes from Duxbury. Traffic buildup seems to begin around 6:30am/7:00am, and you'll miss a lot of it if you leave at 5:30am/6:00am (as you'll be more than halfway done with the commute by the time the build-up starts).

Like other posters have mentioned, I would personally avoid adding the inconvenience of parking at the T and taking it in. You'd have to pay for parking AND it adds extra time for you to drive to the station --> park --> walk to the platform --> wait for the train, etc.

Also, what time would you be leaving in the afternoons? Like Fairfield Co. traffic, I assume afternoon rush hour begins around 3:30pm since a lot of the early birds who work 7am-3pm will be on the roads at that time.
