Im a candidate for a position downtown thats pays "low 60's". Im concerned about the standard of living this salary would afford me. its just the gf and me (for now), but she cant work, so its just my salary. is it possible to be comfortable assuming llittle debt?

Low 60s for two people is going to get you a 1 BR for around $1200 to $1500 in Waltham or Dedham. Where is the job?

Why don't you tell us a bit about yourself and your girlfriend, the kind of things you like to do for fun.

I'm a relatively young college prof no kids, shes a european transplant. While id love to be close to work and near the commons, I know I'll need to commute. im not very picky, just want a basic, safe clean place to live. not worried about being closer to nightlife or anything crazy. hopefully kids are in the future so affordability is a big concern!

Working on Beacon Street, you would save money and have a decent commute living in Swampscott/Winthrop/Revere parking and riding the Blue line to the Bowdoin stop or Charlestown, Malden, Medford or Melrose from the Orange line to North Station. East Medford around the intersection of 28 and 60 is a bit sketchy and the parts near Everett and East Somerville are not the nicest parts. Dedham and Waltham would be a more complicated commute, so scratch that thought.

Which number block of Beacon St? It could make a difference.

Fancy, newer one bedrooms in the suburbs start at $1500-$1800 monthly, I believe.

Probably not allowed to due to visa issues?

But to address OP's concerns, I do fine making much less than low 60s. Don't worry about it.
