Can anyone suggest interesting restaurants in downtown Boston? And good coffee shops?

I highly recommend Cafe de Boston, it has little bit of everything for different tastes, good selection of Turkish food, fresh Pizza, fresh tossed salad bar (customized by you), and a whole bunch of other stuff. Google "Cafe de Boston" and it'll show up on google map.
As for coffee, I personally like Gunther Tootie's but not sure if they have a location in downtown area.

The Barking Crab on Sleeper St, between Seaport Blvd and Northern Ave, is great fun for undistinguished seafood in a lively casual setting. In the North End the place to go for fresh delicious pizza - arguably - is Pizzeria Regina, after which you should pick up cannoli at Mike's Pastry and/or buy a cone of gelato at any one of the open stands along/around Hanover St. Though fairly "generic," M J O'Connor's on the ground floor of the Park Plaza Hotel does the term "Irish pub" proud.

Perhaps the healthful b.good chain? There are a few locales, including Harvard Sq. They use Toscannini's ice cream from Cambridge, local corn for their grilled corn on the cob, and their baked French fries I ordered today were rather good (considering they weren't fried).

Boloco is a local burrito chain in a nice, sleek setting. Ads say they have "inspired" burritos. Pleasant to sit or order out. And their Boylston St. spot near Berkee College opens until 2 am on weekends! It stands for BOston LOcal COmpany, btw.

What do you like (or not like) in particular?

Sayid Linus Silvertones Bar and Grille very near Boston Common is very good. But I was a tourist so I may not know much.

Yes, I heard YEARS ago that Silvertone, in a basement, is a great spot for people from the restaurant industry to congregate.

Even Ch. 5's Chronicle years ago mentioned them in one of their restaurant shows.

Good meatloaf, mac 'n cheese, and other comfort foods and cool drinks are what I heard about back then. Hopefully, that's still the case.

...

What about Lucky's Lounge in Ft. Point Channel area? Has been there for years with no sign or windows, but seems to attract a cool, young crowd. Never been, though.

I had sheperds pie and my wife had a tuna melt. Both were awesome.

L'aroma Cafe on Tremont Street in the Backbay. Silvertone's is good. Good restaurants, you'll want to go to North End/South End/Backbay/Beacon Hill... basically, OUT of the immediate Downtown Boston area! Beehive in the South End is fun. Good food (their poutine is not authentic but still delicious because gravy+melted cheese...) and live music!

The oldest restaurant in the USA is The Union Oyster House on the Blackstone Block near Quincy Market. Go for chowder and tradition. The whole Blackstone block is a must see in Boston. Stop in the Green Dragon and have a beer in the same pub George Washington drank at. Then go to Quincy Market for rverything and anything all good and all cheap.

Union Oyster House is a tourist trap--the food is wretched and you pay a lot for the "history".

Ditto Quincy Market, which is on par with your average mall food court.
