If I visit Boston for a few weeks and stay in the downtown area, on the peninsula near the financial district, do I need a car or will public transport be enough? Are there grocery stores in the financial district?

If you plan on only staying downtown and within the city limits, then you definitely dont want a car. Walking and Public Transit are the preferred methods. The closest "T" accessible grocery stores are Whole Foods in Beacon Hill, Shaws in Copley Square and C-Mart in Chinatown. There are also smaller specialty grocers around if you just wanted a couple smaller items to hold you over.

You definitely don't need a car. As others have mentioned, it would be more of a liability than anything else. I'm not sure what you mean when you say the peninsula near the financial district. Are you talking about the Seaport area around Summer and Congress Streets? If so, then you're on the #7 bus route. That route runs between Downtown Boston and City Point in South Boston by way of South Station. If you were staying in one of the hotels in the Seaport area, you could hop on this bus to run to Stop and Shop on Broadway in South Boston, or you could walk there if you felt adventurous. The bus runs every day except Sunday. Check out the MBTA website for more information.

Not only do you NOT need a car in DOWNTOWN Boston, but if you bring one, you will have trouble finding cheap parking. Some garages around here charge around $250 a month to rent parking spaces.
