Hello All,

I'm thinking about moving to Boston in the fall. I'm 27 year old single female and I've been to Boston only a few times and absolutely loved it.

I grew up in south Jersey, close to Philly. I lived in the suburbs before I decided I needed a change and up & left 2 years ago. I live in Downtown Manhattan now. It's pretty quiet in the area I live in; a lot of tourists during the day though. I really do love NYC and I think its the greatest city in the world but I think it has an expiration date for most and I feel mine is approaching. I'm not ready to move to the suburbs but I feel Boston could be a good fit since its a smaller city and seems much more "normal" than NYC. I feel like its so hard to keep up in NYC; I feel like I'm never trendy enough and sometimes it seems like its all about how much you make, what your job is, what your wearing, etc etc.

I am a pretty average kinda gal and enjoy going to pubs and eating American food. I'm pretty picky with what I eat. I was a vegetarian for about 5 years but I started eating meat again about a year ago. The food in NYC is amazing but I think I could deal with a lot less options, since I've been reading that there are not nearly as many restaurants in Boston.

My main concerns for moving to Boston are if I am going to meet friends and how the dating scene is. I would like to live in one of the main parts of the actual city, possibly South Boston. I feel like dating in NYC is different for everyone but I have not had a good experience with it. I have only been in Boston 3 times, for the last 3 years St. patricks day weekend. Sooooo, I don't think its good to judge meeting people in Boston based on my experience being that most of the people I met and talked to were pretty drunk.

WHAT TO DOOOOO !!!! Is Boston a good fit?

THANKS!!

I've lived in South Boston for 14 years now and have enjoyed it very much. It's safe, walkable, and a great location if you're working downtown. Tough to say if Boston is a good fit for someone you've never met, but Boston is certainly slower paced and much less trendy. IMO pluses.

At the end of this month the transit authority is going to start a year-long "pilot project" involving the extension of service on the subways, and some bus lines, to 3 o'clock on Saturday and Sunday mornings. (Everything ordinarily shuts down completely between 1 and 5 AM each day of the week.) That should tell you a lot of what you need to know about the night life and pace of this city.

Thank you both ! Yes I know the nightlife is much different. Even the bars in my small hometown in Nj are open past 2am but that's not too big of a deal for me. I read an article today saying the mayor of boston is trying to get that extended anyway.

Is south boston (and Boston in general) a good place for someone that's single and has no friends in the area? Haha I may have to buy a cat....

What are the best areas to live for someone like me?

I think South Boston could be very happening for a young professional person in their 20s. The North End is a lot of fun too. Although, be extra careful if you visit. There have been some attacks of women lately in the North End.

South Boston is full of single young professionals. Many are transplants. I had a friend/neighbor who was from the Philly area as well. She got married a couple years ago so apparently the dating scene worked for her. I remember whenever she went home, she'd always bring back a case of Yuengling. A cat is of course another option, but def no more than 2. Any more, you can kiss off any chance of ever dating.

Another neighborhood worth considering would be Charlestown. Similar demographics and rent $.

Yeah it's crazy how people are going nutty over it. We were down at LTK in the Seaport last weekend and the keg was kicked. Of course it was the holiday weekend...

It's a pretty decent cheap beer, but I don't get the hype. Eh.

I assume you need to work. It would be prudent to find a job first and then find a place to live that gives you a reasonable commute to that job.
