For that price I would look into West Roxbury, Dedham or further out into Roslindale (if you want to live on that side of Boston). In general avoid the Washington St. area (from Forest Hills out to at least a little past the W Roxbury Pkwy.)

I was looking into West Roxbury but my BF needs the T for work.

I've seen some of those condominiums / apartment buildings on the Jamaicaway / Riverway towards Huntington go in the $1,200 to $1,500 range. Seems like a convenient location.

What about Quincy? That's where I would be if I was to rent and commute by T (and on that budget).

W. Roxbury (and Roslindale) have very frequent bus service to Forest Hills, if he is willing to do that (tons do). The Purple Line is an option as well, despite the extra cost and spotty reliability.

Which ones, where? I would pass on Mission Hill. Not as bad as before, but still...

Across from the Pond, there are two or three buildings that seem to have a lot of Longwood Medical people living in them.

I was also curious about the Arborway Gardens close to the Arborway, but kind of feel discouraged based on these Forest Hill stop reviews. I'm pretty comfortable traveling the red line downtown through Alewife very late at night, getting off at any of the stops. Wondering how Forest Hills compares with Alewife on the sketch factor?

Which T stops are in Quincy. We haven't considered it because we have pretty much no knowledge of the area. Is it a safe neighborhood? We did check out a nice apartment in W.Roxbury and it would have been a bus-to-train commute for him which would probably double his current 30-45 minute commute.
