My fiance and I moved to Boston a year or two ago and we are both from the Carolinas. My side of the family is from New England originally and i still have extended family here. I brought the lady on a couple family visits up here and she loved the city. After college we decided to move up here since we are young (mid-late 20s) and wanted to live and work in world class city. She really likes it here for the most part but i get some anxiety and miss the nice beaches and cities of the carolinas where our friends and family live. I feel like she kind of wanted to get away and explore and so did i but now i miss the not unbearably cold winters of the south and the "nice" residents. it does not help when people up here always complain about the weather and call me crazy for moving here. I know i will be able to force the lady to plan to move back when its closer to us having kids but my fear is getting jobs/interviews down south. will the fact we are from the south and went to college there be enough for employers to consider us when we want to move back? i hear nothing but bad things about job hunting in other regions, but i hope potential empoyers would see why we were applying! i would make it clear we were moving back to be close to family and start a family. we have gotten great job experiecne in boston at the very least. i have friends from the south who live in boston too but it seems they even move back down south. do i have anything to worry about that will keep us stuck in boston? or will one of us get job back south at reasonable time when we are ready to move?

Everyone I knew from the South that I met in Massachusetts went back to the South after two or three years and each and every one of them was and still is gainfully employed. Especially with youth on your side, I would expect you to do fine.

I'm on the flip side of your story. I'm a Boston native who's lived in NC since college. I love both places, but I'm happy where I am - for now.

I don't think that it should be too difficult for you to move back south when the time is right. The job market isn't quite as strong here as it used to be, but there are still plenty of people moving here every day. And of course, the current conditions aren't the ones you'll be dealing with. A lot can change each year.

When the time comes for your move, you may have to wait a bit to find the job you want. Or you may need to be more flexible about your location. Be patient. You will find the right fit.

Good luck! Enjoy your time in Boston. Don't worry about moving home - for now.
